The cottage and castle are buried in rich history.

The main building was erected during the barony of Robert Skene after he was granted the title in 1318 by King Robert, who held the crown from 1306 until his death in 1329.

The title held by the Skene family until 1827 gave him this impressive building, which has been re-modelled several times, eventually becoming the museum it is today.
